What Is a White Label App? A Fitness Guide

A white label app is a platform's app under your brand, and HubFit's Branded App puts yours on the App Store and Google Play.

An example branded coaching app, Built by Dani: its App Store page on an iPhone, its app icon floating beside it, and App Store and Google Play badges, with Dani looking on in a bright modern studio.

A white label app is an app built and run by one company and published under another business's name, logo and colors. With HubFit's Branded App, that business is yours: clients download an app with your name from the App Store and Google Play, and we build, publish and keep it updated for you.

Key takeaways

  • Your brand outside, a proven platform inside. No developers, no code.
  • $189 a month, no setup fee, no commitment. HubFit's Branded App sits on top of your HubFit subscription and is typically live in 7 to 10 business days once your Apple and Google developer accounts are ready.
  • Built and maintained for you. We build, submit and maintain your iOS and Android apps, including store review and the privacy policy.
  • Far cheaper than custom. A custom app costs about $80,000 to $250,000 and 6 to 12 months to build.

What is a white label app?

A white label app is a ready-made app that a business licenses and publishes as its own. The provider builds and maintains the software, and the business puts its name, icon and colors on it.

The white label app meaning in plain words: someone else's engine, your name on the door.

For fitness businesses, the engine is a coaching platform with training, nutrition, check-ins and messaging already built. A white label fitness app (or white label coaching app) gives that platform's client app your branding instead of the platform's.

Example branded app: the client home screen as Bali, in its own pink with its own logo, showing today's tasks, challenges, a community and resources

White label vs custom app

A white label app gives you your own store listing without the cost of custom app development. Here's how it compares with building your own.

A third option, your logo inside someone else's app, is the one people mix up with white label. HubFit's Custom Branding puts your logo and color inside the HubFit client app, but the app on the stores is still called HubFit.

The Branded App is the real thing: your own custom branded app on the App Store and Google Play, under your name and icon. Clients search for you, not for us.

Why get your white label app with HubFit?

HubFit is the proven way to get your own app for coaches, trainers, nutrition coaches, creators, gyms and studios whose clients open an app every week. Two real examples:

  • For Her Kind is Dr. Alisa DiFruscia's 1:1 virtual coaching for women: custom training, nutrition plans, video check-ins and a community, all inside her own app.
  • Proven is Josh Taylor's evidence-based coaching for people with jobs, families and real schedules: 200+ programs, twice-weekly live streams and 1:1 coaching, all inside Proven's own app.

Two screens from the HubFit client app: a day's nutrition log at 2,120 of 2,100 calories with carbs, fat and protein bars, and a Personal Records page showing 23 PRs and a best gain of +12.5%

Here is what you get:

  • Everything your clients need. Training and workout tracking, nutrition and meal plans, check-ins, habits, progress, messaging, community, challenges and on-demand content.
  • Built, submitted and maintained for you. We prepare the store listings and handle App Store and Google Play review and the privacy policy.
  • Updates and maintenance included. New HubFit features and fixes reach your app automatically.
  • No disruption for clients. Clients already on HubFit download your app and sign in with their existing details. Their programs, history and messages are all there.

How does a white label app work?

A white label app works by running many branded copies of one app on a single platform. With HubFit it takes four steps:

  1. Share your brand. Your app name, logo and brand color. No brand kit yet? We help you settle the name, icon and color.
  2. Open your Apple and Google developer accounts. Enroll your business as an organization (a free D-U-N-S number); we walk you through it.
  3. We build and submit. We build the iOS and Android apps and take them through App Store and Google Play review.
  4. Your app is launched. Clients find it by searching your name.

Apple only accepts a coaching app from the business behind it (guideline 4.2.6), so it's published under your business.

How much does a white label app cost?

A white label app costs a monthly fee plus the app stores' own fees; a custom app costs far more to build and run.

CostHubFit Branded AppCustom-built app
BuildIncluded$80,000 to $250,000
Time to launch7 to 10 business days6 to 12 months
Monthly$189 + subscription$2,000 to $5,000

The custom figures are our estimate for building and running a coaching app: hosting, maintenance, video and notifications. Store fees are paid to Apple and Google.

Year one, worked out. The Branded App is $189 a month on top of your HubFit subscription, so $2,268 a year, with no setup fee. Add Apple's $99 and Google's $25, and the add-on and store fees come to $2,392 in the first year, with your HubFit subscription on top.

What are the pros and cons of a white label app?

The big advantage is a branded app in days instead of months, with no development team. The trade-off is that you license the product rather than own the code.

  • Pros: fast launch, no developers, store listing and updates handled, proven features, your name on clients' home screens.
  • Cons: no feature unique to your business, a monthly fee while the app is live, and your own developer accounts to set up (we walk you through both).

The main risks are client data and the exit. Ask where client data lives and what happens if you stop paying.

FAQ

These are the questions people ask most about white label apps.

What is a white label version of an app?

A white label version of an app is a copy of an existing app published under a different business's brand. It has the same features as the original, with a new name, icon, colors and store listing. The business that publishes it doesn't build or maintain the software. The provider does that.

Yes. White labeling is a normal licensing arrangement when the provider licenses the software to you. The app stores add their own rules: Apple wants the app submitted by the business that provides its content. So publish under your own developer account, as every HubFit Branded App is.

Do I need my own Apple and Google developer accounts?

Yes. Store rules require a branded app to be published under the business's own developer account. Apple charges $99 a year and Google Play a one-time $25. Both are enrolled as an organization, which needs a registered business and a free D-U-N-S number. We guide you through both, step by step (how publishing on the App Store works).

Will my clients know the app runs on another platform?

Usually not, and they don't need to. Clients see your app name, your icon and your business as the seller in the store; if the seller is the platform, that's a red flag, not a real white label app. Day to day they use your program, your check-ins and your messages.

Who owns a white label app and the client data?

You own your brand, your store listing and your client relationships; the provider owns the software. With HubFit's Branded App, if you cancel the add-on, the branded app is removed from the stores, and you can keep coaching your clients on HubFit.

How long does a white label app take to launch?

A white label app usually takes days to weeks, against months for a custom build (what a custom build costs). HubFit's Branded App is typically live in 7 to 10 business days once your Apple and Google developer accounts are ready. We handle the build, store review and privacy policy in that time.
